You’ll also make a stop at Cache Creek which has an interpretive center and is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. Cache Creek was once a part of the Dobbin and Huffman Sheep Co. that operated in the early 1900’s. Travel to Eureka Bar where 2000 gold fevered miners were camped in 1898, see remnants of the hotel/saloon, post office, and building for a stamp mill constructed, and financed by East Coast investors. Visit Dug Bar an affiliated site of the Nez Perce National Historical Park where Chief Joseph band’s of nimíipuu (Nez Perce) forded the Snake River on May 31, 1877 while complying with the U.S. government’s demand to leave their homeland in the Wallowa Valley of northeastern Oregon and to move onto the smaller Nez Perce Reservation near Lapwai, Idaho. Continue on to Deadline Creek also known as Deep Creek. Of the many crimes and injustices committed against early Chinese immigrants in the American West, what may have been the most brutal occurred at Deep Creek on the Oregon side of the Snake River in Hells Canyon. In May 1887, at what is now known as Chinese Massacre Cove, as many as thirty-four Chinese gold miners were ambushed and murdered by a gang of horse thieves and schoolboys from Wallowa County.
